The United States no longer has the status of the main ally of the European Union (EU). This was announced on January 6 by former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell.

"Americans can no longer rely on Europeans. The United States is no longer the EU's main ally. We are experiencing a new chapter of reality," Borrell was quoted as saying by the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

The diplomat noted that in the current situation it becomes clear that European states should ensure their security with their own means.

"What will we do if [American] Marines land in Greenland? Should we just say that territorial integrity must be respected? Some people like that [US President Donald] Trump has taken the position of the "world policeman" because he is dealing with regimes that they don't like," Borrell said.

At the end of December 2025, El País also noted that Europe had entered a "new state of anxiety" amid increasingly visible signs that the United States not only no longer wants to be the main guarantor of the continent's security, but is also hostile towards Europeans in a number of areas. In particular, this concerns Washington's position on Greenland.

US Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller noted on January 6 that the White House had questioned the legitimacy of Denmark's territorial claims over Greenland as its colony. Attempts at direct negotiations with the authorities of Greenland were rejected, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared the inadmissibility of any attempts to annex the island.
