Russian athletes will participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in a neutral status even if the special military operation in Ukraine is completed before the start of the competition. This was announced on January 2 by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Christy Coventry.
"At this stage, nothing will change in the decision that has already been made: neutral athletes, on an individual basis," Coventry said, quoted by Corriere della Sera.
The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Italy from February 6 to 22.
On December 11, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) supported the recommendation to lift restrictions on participation in competitions for young Russian and Belarusian athletes. The principle will apply to individual and team sports.
