- Power unit No. 1 of Kursk NPP-2 was connected to the unified energy system of Russia
The new power unit No. 1 of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant —2 (NPP-2) began operation and was connected to the unified energy system of the Russian Federation. This was announced on January 1 in a press release on the website of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom.
"The first new power unit of Kursk NPP-2 is connected to the unified energy system of Russia. The innovative power unit with the VVER-TOI reactor was synchronized with the grid and reached a capacity of 240 MW on December 31 at 12:05 Moscow time," the report says.
According to Alexey Likhachev, the company's CEO, power unit No. 1 became the first facility within the framework of the latest VVER TOI project. In addition, it has become the most powerful of the company's power units.
"The Kursk block is the first implementation of the latest VVER TOI nuclear power plant project. This project has not only incorporated the latest achievements in the field of nuclear energy. It is also the most powerful power unit in the Rosatom fleet: 1,250 MW, which is 55 MW more than the previous record holders, the Leningrad NPP—2 power units," Likhachev said.
The launch of the new unit of the Kursk NPP was also the first step in increasing the share of nuclear generation in the energy balance of the Russian Federation. So, by 2042, Rosatom will have to build a total of 38 units.
"And right now, a year later, we are taking the first step out of 38, the goal of which is to bring nuclear generation in the country's energy mix from the current 20 to 25%," Likhachev recalled.
Andrey Petrov, First Deputy Director General for Atomic Energy at Rosatom, also added that power unit No. 1 will help increase nuclear power generation for the needs of the Kursk Region by more than 50%.
Likhachev said on December 28 that despite the foreign policy pressure, the Russian nuclear power industry is strengthening its position in the international arena.
On November 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian Federation plans to organize the serial production of small nuclear power plants. In the future, Russia plans to build 38 new nuclear power units in less than 20 years, mainly in the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. Their total capacity will be comparable to the capacity of the entire existing nuclear generation in the country.
