The doctor talked about alcohol causing cancer
Alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of developing malignancies. Physiologist Alexander Kalyuzhin, senior lecturer at the Department of Fundamental Medical Disciplines of the State University of Education, told about this on Friday, December 26.
The doctor clarified that alcohol and its breakdown product, acetaldehyde, are classified as carcinogens of the first category, that is, substances for which the ability to cause cancer in humans has been proven. According to him, the key is not the type of drink, but the ethanol itself. Thus, beer, wine and strong alcoholic beverages have the same carcinogenic potential, Kalyuzhin emphasized.
"The association of alcohol consumption with the development of cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx, esophagus, liver, colon and rectum, as well as breast cancer in women has been scientifically confirmed," the doctor said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
The physiologist said that ethanol is converted by the body into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound that can damage cell DNA and disrupt its repair mechanisms.
"This increases the likelihood of mutations and the start of malignant growth. Additionally, alcohol increases chronic inflammation, disrupts hormonal balance and reduces the body's defenses," the expert added.
He stressed that from the standpoint of cancer prevention, there is no safe dose of alcohol.
Earlier in the day, nutritionist Lyubov Gorelova told how to avoid a hangover when drinking alcohol during the New Year holidays. The specialist noted that the right choice of drinks plays an important role. She urged to give preference to proven brands and avoid cheap alcohol or exotic cocktails.
In turn, Olga Sivaeva, a general practitioner at the Romashka Clinical Diagnostic Center, noted that special attention should be paid to maintaining water balance, since even mild dehydration increases fatigue, headaches and worsens alcohol tolerance, the Moscow City News agency reports.
