- The weather forecaster reported snowdrifts and a cold snap in St. Petersburg for the New Year
Stable snow cover will form in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region by the end of December, with snowdrifts exceeding 20 cm in height. This was announced on December 27 in a conversation with Izvestia by the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, Roman Vilfand.
According to him, "real snow" will come to the region, which will be accompanied by a decrease in temperature and the continuation of active cyclonic activity. The forecaster noted that the expected snow cover will be much denser and higher than the previously observed 2-3 cm.
Until the weekend and on Monday, the temperature in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region will remain near zero - from -4 to +1 degrees, precipitation in the form of wet snow and rain is possible in some places. However, on December 29, a cold snap will begin: the region will be in the rear of the cyclone, where air masses of northern origin will enter.
Snowfall is forecast on December 30 and 31, as well as on January 1, against the background of low atmospheric pressure and active cyclonic activity, which will ensure the formation of a dense and stable snow cover.
