- Scientists reported possible resurgence of solar flares on December 30.
Solar flares may resume on the eve of the New Year holidays. This was announced on December 26 by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"Based on the data analysis, the complex of spots 4294-4296-4298 (the largest this year) returns in the southern hemisphere of the Sun (below the equator), which was located opposite the Earth in the first week of December and went to the opposite side on December 12-13," the laboratory's Telegram channel says.
According to experts, two large active centers will enter the zone of confident visibility from the Ground on December 30-31. The largest sunspot complex is returning to the southern hemisphere this year, but it is expected that this time its area will be significantly smaller.
It is reported that in the northern hemisphere, it is possible to return the area that has already passed through the disk three times and produced the strongest outbreaks of the year. At the same time, if the plasma release is directed towards the Earth, this may create conditions for observing the northern lights on New Year's Eve.
On December 24, the laboratory reported that the number of days with magnetic storms in 2025 was the highest in the last 10 years. According to the IKI RAS, in 358 days since the beginning of the year, geomagnetic disturbances have been registered in 69 cases, which is significantly higher than in 2024 (44 days) and comparable to the record values of 2015-2016. The total number of geomagnetically disturbed days, when the Kp index (indicator of geomagnetic activity) reached its maximum values, was 164 days — 75% more than last year. This is the highest number since 2005, when 169 such days were recorded.
