Fetisov named hockey player Ovechkin the athlete of 2025 in Russia
Alexander Ovechkin, the Russian captain of the Washington Capitals hockey club, is the best Russian athlete of the current year due to his achievements. This was announced on December 25 by State Duma deputy and two-time Olympic champion Vyacheslav Fetisov.
"I believe that Alexander Ovechkin is the best Russian athlete of 2025. Because a record determines the best," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
In addition, Fetisov included National Hockey League (NHL) goalkeeper Sergei Bobrovsky, who won two Stanley Cups in a row, as well as world champion gymnast Angelina Melnikova in the top three athletes of the year.
On December 13, Ovechkin rose to a clean tenth place in the history of the NHL championships in terms of the number of points scored in the majority. The striker reached the mark of 611 points (328 goals and 283 assists) in games in most championships, surpassing Czech hockey player Jaromir Jagr in this indicator. Currently, the record for the most points belongs to Canadian Wayne Gretzky (890 points).
