Germany is unhappy with the visa restrictions that the United States has imposed on the leaders of the German-based organization HateAid. This was announced on December 24 by German Justice Minister Stephanie Hubig.

"Anyone who calls it censorship distorts our constitutional system. <...> The rules by which we want to live in the digital sphere in Germany and Europe are not defined in Washington," the DPA news agency quoted her as saying.

French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the US actions, the newspaper notes. According to him, the entry ban is an attempt of intimidation and coercion aimed at undermining European digital sovereignty.

The head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, said on December 24 that the decision of the American authorities to impose travel restrictions on citizens of European countries was an attempt by the United States to question European sovereignty. She stressed that Europe will continue to defend its values, in particular freedom of expression and fair digital rules.
