The State Museum of the History of Russia has opened the traditional Scientific Christmas Tree of the Polytechnic Museum of Moscow, which this year is dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Arctic passage and the exploration of the North. This was announced on December 24 by Dmitry Kozhanov, the general director of the museum.

"We are concluding 2025 with the fact that the 500th anniversary of the Arctic passage, the discovery of the Arctic took place this year, and our Scientific Christmas Tree is dedicated to this event," he said.

Kozhanov recalled that the tradition of the museum's Christmas trees dates back to 1944, when the first such event was held during the Great Patriotic War. According to him, the Scientific Christmas Tree differs from ordinary holidays in that children do not just have fun during the event, but acquire new knowledge. During the interactive program, the children will learn about the Arctic, scientific stations, natural resources and flora of the region, as well as learn how to knit sea knots and understand flag signaling used in the fleet.

"For the past three years, we have been holding polytechnic Christmas trees together with our good friend and partner, the State Museum of the History of Russia," Kozhanov explained.

He assured that the Polytechnic Museum will continue the tradition of such Christmas trees. Kozhanov also expressed hope that next year the event will be held in the main building of the museum, which is under restoration.

The day before, the installation of the country's main New Year tree on the Kremlin Cathedral Square was completed in Moscow. A century-old spruce with a height of 26 m was brought from the village of Zemlino, Ruzsky urban district, Moscow region. The selection of the tree, which should have an even trunk, a pyramidal shape and lush needles, was carried out over several months. This year, the fir tree is decorated in the "Frosty Pattern" style using mother-of-pearl, white, gold and blue shades. The Christmas tree is decorated with 2.5 thousand toys, 2.5 km of garlands, as well as the largest ever LED snowflakes with a diameter of up to 115 cm.
