Russia confirmed its support for Syria's sovereignty after a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Syrian counterpart Asaad al-Shibani in Moscow. This was reported on December 24 on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"During the exchange of views on the situation in and around Syria, Russia's principled position in support of the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of this country was confirmed," the statement said.

It is noted that the need to consolidate international and regional efforts to help achieve sustainable stabilization of the situation in Syria was also highlighted. Issues related to the development of Russian-Syrian bilateral relations, as well as the deepening of political dialogue and interaction between the two countries were also discussed during the talks.

Earlier in the day, Lavrov noted that Russia is committed to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. Hassan Al-Shibani also added that Russian-Syrian relations are currently entering a new stage.
