A gas tanker built in Russia for the first time was handed over to the customer
The ceremony of handing over to Sovcomflot an LNG tanker, built for the first time in Russia, took place at the Zvezda shipyard, operated by Rosneft. The ARC 7 class icebreaking tanker Alexey Kosygin has become the lead in the series that Zvezda is building for the Arctic LNG-2 project.
The ship is named after the Soviet politician and statesman, twice Hero of Socialist Labor Alexei Kosygin. Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in the naming ceremony of the gas tanker. The tanker has already successfully passed sea trials.
The production of such gas carriers requires a large amount of research and development work, Rosneft stressed. During the construction of Alexey Kosygina, innovative technologies and unique equipment were used, and highly qualified personnel were involved in the work.
This is one of the most difficult projects in the industry, said Konstantin Pankratov, a representative of SSK Zvezda. "Such vessels are now in high demand in our country for the transportation of liquefied natural gas along the Northern Sea Route. This gives a great boost to the economy and to the development of the industry," he said.
The gas carriers of this series have a high ice class and are capable of operating in Arctic conditions, independently overcoming ice more than two meters thick. Each tanker holds more than 172 thousand cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.
The Zvezda shipbuilding complex is being created in the city of Bolshoy Kamen, Primorsky Krai, on behalf of the president, and the Rosneft company is the operator of the project. The shipyard has more than 60 orders in its portfolio, and 12 vessels have already been launched. From 2020 to 2025, the shipyard handed over seven vessels to customers, including Aframax type oil tankers with a deadweight of 114 thousand tons.
