Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences explained the reasons for abandoning the four-day work week

When switching to a four-day working week, Russians may face the fact that they will have nothing to occupy themselves on weekends. This was announced on December 21 by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Education Gennady Onishchenko.

"Do our citizens know how to relax or not? Just imagine, seven days a week, we work for four, and for three days we think where to put ourselves," TASS quoted him as saying.

The expert noted that reducing working hours can cause employment problems and add difficulties in organizing leisure activities. Onishchenko added that such a transition is possible, but only with the introduction of new technologies that will allow maintaining the pace of work in various sectors of the economy. However, according to the academician, a sharp reduction in working hours without proper preparation can affect the development of the country's economy.

Alexander Safonov, Professor of the Department of Psychology and Human Capital Development at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Mass Communications of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, noted on October 28 that maintaining a four-day working week for all employees in Russia is currently an impossible task. According to Safonov, it will be difficult to find specialists to maintain a seven-day regime of emergency medical care and hospitals or a five-day regime of schools and kindergartens.

Yaroslav Nilov, head of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans' Affairs, said on September 15 that Russia could eventually switch to a four-day working week, but this process should not be regulatory. He clarified that by reducing the number of working days, it is impossible to reduce the income of employees. At the same time, as Nilov noted, the transition should be initiated by the market itself.
