One of the UK pubs has banned Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves from visiting the establishment due to a "catastrophic tax increase," the Daily Mail reported on December 21.

"Rachel Reeves was banned from visiting a local pub because of her disastrous tax increase, which brought the hospitality industry to its knees," the article says, according to Martin Knowles, the owner of the Marsh Inn pub.

According to the newspaper, in July 2024, shortly after Reeves took over the Treasury after the Labor victory in the election, she posed for a photo with Knowles in his pub. But now the owner of the establishment has posted a sign that makes it clear that all MPs from the Labor Party, including Reeves, are prohibited from entering his establishment.

The skyrocketing insurance premiums and minimum wage increases introduced by Reeves also contributed to the fact that hundreds of pubs were on the verge of bankruptcy.

In addition, the Chancellor does not rule out further tax increases in 2026. Experts estimate that 2,000 pubs in the UK could close in 2026 unless the government changes its policy.

In March, Reeves said that the UK government intends to massively reduce the number of civil servants amid economic problems. According to her estimates, about 10 thousand people may lose their jobs. Reeves emphasized that some tasks that previously required human involvement can now be "performed by technology."
