- The expert spoke about a possible increase in the number of northern lights in Siberia
In a few hundred years, the inhabitants of Siberia will begin to see the northern Lights more often due to the displacement of the Earth's north magnetic pole towards the Taimyr Peninsula from the Canadian Archipelago. This was announced on Sunday, December 21, by Alexander Pasenko, senior researcher at the O. Y. Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences.
"Residents of Siberia will probably be able to observe the aurora more often in a few hundred years due to the movement of the Earth's north magnetic pole <...> if the trend of this movement continues," Pasenko told TASS.
According to the expert, the displacement of the magnetic pole itself does not pose a threat. It is noted that the aurora borealis in Siberia has continued to increase in frequency recently, and at the end of September 2025, residents of the Novosibirsk region, Kuzbass and neighboring regions noticed the Aurora borealis.
In the Telegram channel of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research (IKI) On November 12, the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that one of the strongest auroral zones has been forming over the planet in recent years. According to experts, currently the peak of activity is observed in the western hemisphere — over the USA and Canada.
