- The Chinese Foreign Ministry urged the world to be vigilant after Japan's statements about nuclear weapons
China and the international community should be vigilant after the Japanese official's statements about the need to possess nuclear weapons. This was stated on December 19 by the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, at a briefing.
"If the information is reliable, then the situation is very serious. She uncovers a dangerous plot by some individuals in Japan to circumvent international law and obtain nuclear weapons. China and the international community should exercise extreme vigilance and serious concern," RIA Novosti quoted the diplomat as saying.
He added that such statements reflect the desire of Japanese far-right conservative forces to revive militarism, free themselves from the constraints of the post-war international order and accelerate remilitarization.
Guo Jiakun also called on the international community to recognize that Japan's position on nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear disarmament is hypocritical.
The Kyodo news agency reported yesterday that an unnamed official responsible for national security issues in the administration of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi considers it necessary for the country to acquire nuclear weapons. He noted that he considers this unrealistic, as this event may cause a negative reaction both within the country and abroad.
