Belgium has opposed the use of frozen Russian assets to provide Kiev with a so-called "reparation loan" for fear of facing economic collapse and retaliation. This was announced on December 17 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom Maxim Prevost.

"Belgium does not raise its objections out of fear of pressure or retaliation. We are only trying to avoid the collapse of our own economy if a decision is made without proper guarantees. A "reparation loan" is not the only way to help Ukraine," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

During his speech in Parliament, the minister stressed that the use of Russian assets is not the only solution that could be taken to help Kiev. According to him, there are other ways that carry less legal and financial risks.

The Politico newspaper learned on the same day that some countries that are part of the European Union allow a decision to use Russian assets to bypass the decision of Brussels. A similar statement, as noted in the text, was voiced by the Prime Minister of Latvia, Evika Silinja. This publication also reported on the same day that EU members are afraid of the consequences that may occur if the assets of the Russian Federation are nevertheless seized.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. In turn, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added on December 15 that the situation with frozen Russian assets shows that "theft is in the blood of Europeans."
