The media learned about the reasons for postponing work on new sanctions against the Russian Federation

The European Commission (EC) has been forced to postpone work on a new package of sanctions against Russia, focusing on solving the problem of financing Ukraine's needs in 2026-2027. This was reported on December 17 in the Telegram channel of the Ukrainian edition of the European Truth, citing sources in European diplomacy.

"The Commission is in no hurry with the 20th package of sanctions, as the main focus is now on finding a solution for financing Ukraine in 2026-2027," the publication says.

It is noted that work on the preparation of a new package of sanctions was postponed due to problems with financing Kiev until the beginning of 2026. At the same time, the draft may be ready by January, which will allow it to be approved by the anniversary of the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.

The EU promised Kiev joint security guarantees with the United States and announced new sanctions against Russia.

On the same day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that the issue of confiscation of frozen assets of the Russian Federation would not be considered at the EU summit in Brussels. According to him, Hungary was able to win the negotiations before the EU summit.

On December 3, the European Commission approved a potential "reparation loan" for Ukraine, implying the expropriation of sovereign Russian assets in Europe. Later, on December 12, Politico newspaper reported that Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria, Malta opposed the EU proposal to transfer frozen assets of the Russian Federation to Ukraine. It was specified that their amount is approximately €210 billion.

Russian Leader Vladimir Putin noted on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the EU would have negative consequences. In turn, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on December 15 that the situation with frozen Russian assets demonstrates that "theft is in the blood of Europeans."
