Former Czechoslovakia national team defender Josef Goreshovsky has died at the age of 79. This was announced on December 17 by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

"Josef Goreshovsky, a member of the historical Czechoslovak team that won the gold medal at the 1972 World Championship, died on December 15 from health complications," the federation's press service said in a publication on the social network X (former. Twitter).

Goreshovsky won gold at the 1972 World Championships, breaking the nine-year winning streak of the USSR national team. He also became the silver medalist of the 1968 Olympics and the bronze medalist of the 1972 Olympics, where he was recognized as the best defender of the tournament. He also won silver at the 1971 World Cup and bronze at the 1969, 1970 and 1973 World Cups.

At the club level, Goreshovsky played for the teams Kladno, Sparta, Dukla and Ceske Budejovice. After completing his playing career, he was honored with inclusion in the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.
