Increased tensions around Venezuela could lead to unpredictable consequences for the entire western hemisphere. This was announced on December 17 by Alexander Shchetinin, Director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"We hope that the initiator of today's tension, which is escalating around Venezuela, will still be able to keep from further sliding into a situation that threatens to have unpredictable consequences for the entire Western Hemisphere, that they will be able to prevent mistakes," TASS quoted him as saying.

Shchetinin also took part in a flower-laying ceremony at the monument to the national hero of Venezuela, Simon Bolivar, in Moscow, dedicated to the 195th anniversary of the death of the general who fought for the independence of the Spanish colonies in America.

Shchetinin said on December 15 that Russia was providing necessary political support to Venezuela. He also stressed that Russia supports the course of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Earlier, on December 11, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed hope for a peaceful resolution of the conflict between the United States and Venezuela. She compared the current US policy towards other countries with the policy of the big cudgel of Roosevelt, "who at one time proclaimed Washington's right to invade Latin America under the pretext of stabilizing the domestic economic situation."
