The European Union (EU) has offered Belgium three guarantees on the issue of seizing Russian assets to support Ukraine, but Belgian officials consider these guarantees insufficient for the country to agree to such a step. This was reported by Politico newspaper on December 16.

"Firstly, Belgium can get access to financing equal to the entire amount of the package in the event of lawsuits or retaliatory measures from Moscow. Secondly, it can rely on this support system regardless of the total amount of financial guarantees provided by individual EU countries. And thirdly, the money will not be transferred until these guarantees are provided," the message says.

According to the newspaper, it is assumed that all European countries participating in the initiative will have to terminate bilateral investment agreements with Russia at the same time.

However, according to sources, the Belgian delegation stated at a meeting of the permanent representatives that the guarantees offered were insufficient. Politico stressed that Belgium continues to insist on additional guarantees in order to avoid disproportionate risks.

Belgian officials noted that any attempts to ignore the country's concerns would be futile, and the funds stored in Euroclear would not be transferred.
