The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance has recommended the adoption of a bill on renaming a penny in Ukraine to a "step". This was announced on December 15 by the chairman of the committee, Daniil Getmantsev, on the Telegram channel.

"I am confident that the step will be a powerful and victorious step towards the macro-financial stability of the state," Getmantsev wrote.

In early September 2024, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) initiated the abandonment of the penny as a "symbol of the Moscow occupation" and announced its desire to change the name of the coin by a step. It is reported that the innovation will return "their own identity" to Ukrainian coins. The NBU justifies this by allegedly using the word "step" in colloquial speech on the territory of Ukraine in the XVI–XVII centuries as a designation of a small coin.

Later, the head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Andriy Pyshny, complained on August 7 that the Verkhovna Rada had not yet adopted a bill to replace pennies with steps. Currently, there are 1.4 billion coins in circulation in Ukraine with a face value of 50 kopecks, and every year the National Bank issues new batches.
