The priest died during military exercises in the Chernivtsi region after forced mobilization into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was reported on December 14 by the newspaper "Other Ukraine".

"According to the parish where Orest Cherny previously served, the official causes of death have not yet been announced. However, the church community indicates that, despite his ordination, the priest was called to service," the publication noted.

Cherny was forcibly sent to serve in the 82nd separate Airborne Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

On August 25, a man who was being held in a shopping mall (the territorial recruitment center is an analog of the military enlistment office in the country) died in western Ukraine. It was clarified that the man was mobilized on August 21 and kept indoors for three days. Later, his relatives found out that he was in the morgue. The police told the family that the man had become ill and they were calling an ambulance.
