The annual purchases of hundreds of thousands of tons of deicing reagents in Russian cities raise a legitimate question about their impact on shoes. Specialists of the Profi service.<url> explained in an interview with Izvestia on December 14 which shoes suffer the most, and talked about ways to protect against stains, bumps and hardening of materials.

According to Mikhail Terekhov, a shoe dry cleaner, chemicals have different effects on different materials. Unnatural materials, such as synthetics and mesh, demonstrate stability best, although they may leave streaks. The reagents cause the greatest damage to suede shoes, which harden and lose color, and unsightly bumps appear on leather shoes.

"To protect shoes, you need to use special impregnations from moisture and dust, applying 3-4 layers on a clean and dry surface. Protective creams or wax are suitable for leather, and a water—repellent impregnation is suitable for suede," the specialist advised.

Shoe repair specialist Mikhail Afanasyev adds that due to the reagents, leather and suede shoes lose their strength and cracks appear faster, so chemicals must be removed regularly.

According to Afanasyev, UGG boots suffer especially strongly from the effects of reagents, since their material allows chemicals to easily and deeply penetrate inside. The process of removing footprints from such shoes is multi-step. First, the surface is cleaned with a delicate rubber brush from dust and dirt. Then the shoes are soaked in warm water with special means that remove the reagent to the surface. After that, the ugg boots should be tightly wrapped with a triple layer of napkins to remove the remnants of the detergent component and left to dry.

"At the final stages, the pile is combed, if necessary, dyed, greased to soften and applied a water—repellent impregnation. The expert notes that it is better to entrust this work to professionals, but if you wish, you can try to clean it yourself," the expert concluded.

On December 3, Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, said that winter shoes for dogs are not just a fun element of the wardrobe, but the most reliable protection from snow and reagents. However, not all dogs like this accessory. It is also worth trying to consider the option of shoes with suspenders so that they do not fall off. The easiest alternative is to use protective wax before walking. This option is suitable for everyone, the expert says.
