Polish prosecutor Skiba called Butyagin a world-renowned scientist
Alexander Butyagin, a Russian archaeologist detained in Poland, is a world—renowned specialist with extensive knowledge of his research topic. This was announced on December 11 by the press secretary of the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office, Piotr Skiba, on the TVP Info channel.
"We are talking about a man with worldwide fame in the field of archaeological research, a scholarship holder from the European Union, a man who has vast knowledge of the Roman Empire," the prosecutor said.
He added that all interactions with the Russian scientist are carried out within the framework of compliance with international law and human rights.
The detention of Butyagin in Poland was reported earlier in the day, the incident itself occurred last week. The Ukrainian authorities were looking for him for allegedly illegal archaeological research in Crimea. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the situation a legal outrage. According to him, the Russian side will seek the scientist's release.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, noted: Russia hopes that Poland understands the absurdity of the accusations against Butyagin. She added that actions such as detention will not remain without consequences.
On the same day, Skiba told Izvestia that Butyagin faces from 1 to 10 years in prison under Polish law. The Warsaw District Court granted the prosecutor's office's request and imposed a preventive measure on Butyagin in the form of temporary arrest until January 13, 2026. Currently, the Russian archaeologist is being held in the Warsaw-Bialolenka detention center.
