- The Belgian Prime Minister called the EC's idea of using Russian assets for Ukraine a theft.
The European Commission's (EC) proposal to use Russian assets for Ukraine is outright theft. This was announced on December 10 by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever.
He insists that more appropriate solutions can be found than "stealing" funds from the Central Bank of Russia.
"This is the money of a country with which we are not in conflict. It's like entering an embassy, taking out all the furniture and selling it," Belga news agency quoted the politician as saying.
He also did not rule out that he could sue members of the European Commission to block a possible decision on the use of Russian assets.
EC President Ursula von der Leyen said on December 8, after a meeting of European leaders and talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, that it was necessary to make a decision on the withdrawal of frozen Russian assets as soon as possible.
On the same day, the head of the Euroclear International Depository in Belgium, Valerie Urbain, announced that Belgium would not be able to transfer frozen Russian assets to the European Union to finance Ukraine. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, the European Commission's proposed scheme for a reparative loan to Ukraine is "questionable from the point of view of law," as it affects "completely unexplored territory" and threatens financial stability.
