The Sofia City Court refused to extradite Russian Igor Grechushkin to Lebanon in the case of the explosion of a ship in Beirut. This was reported on December 10 by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

"In the court's opinion, Lebanon has not provided sufficient evidence to ensure that he will not be sentenced to death," the publication says.

The Russian's defense points to a different interpretation by the prosecution of the legal classification and acts for which Grechushkin will be punished in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Sofia's chief prosecutor, Angel Kanev, stated that there were grounds for the extradition of the accused.

Grechushkin was the owner of the Rhosus ship that exploded in Beirut in 2020. The man was put on the wanted list at the request of the Lebanese judicial authorities and detained on September 16, 2025. On September 21, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Russia was monitoring the situation surrounding Grechushkin's detention. It was clarified that, if necessary, employees of the consular department of the embassy are ready to assist the Russian.

The explosion in the port of Beirut occurred on August 4, 2020. As a result of the incident, 137 people died, about 5,000 were injured, and several dozen are missing. At the same time, about 300 thousand people lost their homes. Over a hundred buildings were destroyed and damaged due to the explosion. The damage was estimated at several billion dollars.
