- Slovak Prime Minister Fico will not support initiatives to prolong the conflict in Ukraine
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said at the upcoming EU summit that he did not intend to support steps that could lead to a prolongation of the conflict in Ukraine. He posted the appeal on Facebook on December 9 (banned in Russia, belongs to Meta, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).
"We are resolving [issues related to filing] a complaint against the European Commission due to the suspension of Russian gas supplies," Fico said.
He clarified that he was actively consulting with other European leaders and preparing Slovakia's position for the meeting, where he intended to speak out against further escalation and defend the country's national interests.
Earlier, on October 20, the EU Council approved the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to ban gas purchases in Russia from January 1, 2028. In addition, the EU has also decided to impose a ban on the transit of Russian gas through the union to other countries. This measure will take effect on January 1, 2026.
On December 3, the country's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Hungary would not agree with the dictate of Brussels, which wants to ban oil and gas supplies from Russia. He stressed that the ban on Russian energy resources is a political, ideological decision that has no relation to reality, and promised to protect Hungary, the Hungarian economy and families from it.
On December 9, Szijjarto made a statement that Hungary's secure energy supply could not be provided without Russian supplies. He noted that we were able to maintain energy cooperation with Russia, we were able to guarantee the country's energy supply and support the reduction of utility prices in Hungary.
