An analysis of accidents at railway crossings shows that such accidents most often occur at unregulated crossings, where drivers, not convinced of the safety of the maneuver, try to drive in front of a nearby train, the State Traffic Inspectorate notes. Trying to gain a few seconds of travel, motorists often endanger not only their own lives, but also the lives and health of their own passengers, railway staff, passengers of commuter trains and long-distance trains, the department emphasizes.
"We urge motorists not to overestimate their strength and carefully monitor their health. Always get behind the wheel refreshed and well-rested. At the slightest sign of fatigue or indisposition, temporarily cancel the trip. Remember that the lives and health of other road users depend on your well-being. Drivers should take special care when passing intersections and pedestrian crossings. We strongly recommend that you slow down to the minimum speed in advance when approaching them in order to have time to stop and let pedestrians pass. And then do not rush to start moving even when the traffic light allows you to do so — first make sure that the pedestrian crossing in front of you is completely free," said Police Colonel Sergei Hrantskevich, head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of child traffic injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
