- Rosselkhoznadzor: Russians drink 6 million decaliters of sparkling wine on New Year's Eve
December is traditionally the busiest month of the year for the sparkling wine market. The demand for this drink is steadily growing by almost half compared to other periods, and in 2025, according to the estimates of the Rosselkhoznadzor, the dynamics may be even more noticeable. Sales in November-December will increase by 1.75 times compared to previous months, analysts who conducted market research told Izvestia on December 8.
"By the end of 2025, the wholesale market is able to reach 69.5 million decaliters, which is 2.5% higher than last year. In retail, on the contrary, there is a more moderate trend: about 23.4 million decaliters are expected, which is 4% lower than the results of 2024. At the same time, the manufacturing sector is showing steady growth — the production of sparkling wine and champagne may increase to 20 million decaliters, which is a quarter higher than last year's figure," the study says.
It also notes that one of the key factors behind this rise is the growing interest in domestic brands and the expansion of the range of high-quality Russian beverages.
"New Year's Eve retains the status of the main period of sparkling wine consumption. Rosselkhoznadzor estimates that Russians drink about 80 million bottles on New Year's Eve, which is about 6 million decaliters. At the same time, about 70% of families prefer Russian producers, which underlines the strengthening of confidence in domestic products and the gradual formation of an internal culture of consumption of Russian wines," the analysts conclude.
"The growing popularity of domestic sparkling wine producers is not just a market trend, but an indicator of long—term changes in the habits of Russian consumers. People are increasingly choosing domestic brands, assessing their quality, accessibility and connection with traditions. This contributes to the development of Russian wine—growing territories and stimulates the development of the entire industry," Natalia Khudyakova, head of the Rosselkhoznadzor's Center for Sustainable Development, explained to Izvestia.
Analysts also reported that the regional structure of demand demonstrates stable and well-defined features. Thus, the Central Federal District remains the largest market with a share of more than 36%, accounting for about 8.5 million decaliters, with a significant portion coming from Moscow and the Moscow Region, which accumulate over 70% of the district's consumption.
The Northwestern, Southern and Volga Federal Districts show comparable volumes, each at about 3.2 million decaliters. In the Northwestern Federal District, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region remain the key centers, providing 63% of demand. In the Southern District, the Krasnodar Territory is in the lead with a share of 45% and the Rostov Region with 22%.
In the Volga region, the main consumption is formed by the Samara region (16%), the Nizhny Novgorod Region (14%), as well as Tatarstan and Bashkortostan, each of which provides about 10%.
It was clarified that the Siberian Federal District is also at around 3.2 million decaliters, while the Krasnoyarsk Territory (22%) and the Novosibirsk Region (19%) make a significant contribution. The Far Eastern District completes the distribution with a volume of 1.2 million decaliters, more than a third of which falls on Primorsky Krai.
Earlier, on December 6, Irina Nikulina, internist, nutritionist, CEO of the Boiron company in Russia, told how harmful an innocuous glass of champagne is for the figure and what is better to drink this New Year in order not to lose weight loss results by the holiday. She noted that the main thing is to find a compromise between restrictions and excesses. The principle of "choosing the lesser of two evils" works even with champagne. The sweeter it is, the more sugar it contains, which means that it contains calories, and empty calories that do not contain substances useful to the body.
