SZ reported on Germany's refusal to accept new refugees
Germany will not accept additional refugees under the European Union (EU) solidarity mechanism. This was reported on December 8 by the Suddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) newspaper, citing Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
"Germany will not accept additional asylum seekers under the new European solidarity mechanism designed to reduce pressure on EU member states, the German government has said," the newspaper reports.
It is noted that as part of the mechanism to reduce the burden on the most refugee-burdened countries, it is planned to resettle up to 21,000 asylum seekers within the EU.
Earlier, on November 5, the German Interior Ministry began sending emails to migrants from Afghanistan with an offer to return to their homeland for a fee. The immigrants who received the letters have until November 17 to accept the federal government's offer. However, it is not yet clear how many people will agree to this deal and what will happen to those who decide to stay in Germany.
Prior to that, on December 3, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that refugees from Syria who currently live in Germany can be deported from the country, as there are no more reasons for their asylum — the civil war in their homeland is over.
