WP learned about Trump's pardon of about 100 major drug traffickers in 2025
During his term in office in 2025, US President Donald Trump pardoned or commuted sentences for about 100 people accused of crimes related to drug trafficking. This was reported on December 8 by The Washington Post (WP).
Among those pardoned are Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, Baltimore drug lord Garnett Smith and former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, convicted of running a "drug state" that facilitated the supply of cocaine to the United States.
White House spokeswoman Carolyn Leavitt stressed that these pardons "do not interfere with protecting the territory of the United States and stopping the supply of drugs." In turn, critics point out the contradiction between Trump's rhetoric and mass pardons.
On December 6, Trump announced that the US Armed Forces (AF) would soon begin attacking ground targets as part of the fight against drug cartels in Latin America. At the same time, the head of the White House said that the United States has information about the location of targets. According to him, about 300,000 people have died due to drugs in the country over the past year.
