Benin's Interior Ministry has restored order after an attempted coup in the country. This was announced on December 7 by the head of the department, Alassane Seydoux.

"Faced with the situation, the leadership of the armed forces of Benin remained faithful to the republican principles. Their reaction allowed them to maintain control over the situation and prevent an assassination attempt," Jeune Afrique magazine quoted him as saying.

Shortly before 12:00 local time (14:00 Moscow time), the national television signal was allegedly restored.

Earlier in the day, the military in Benin, which seized control of national television, announced that they had removed President Patrice Talon from office. In addition, Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, who led the takeover of television, declared himself chairman of the military reconstruction committee.

The Russian Embassy in Benin called on Russian citizens to "stay in their homes" until the situation is clarified in connection with the military's statement about the seizure of power.
