Gunshots are heard in Benin's largest city Cotonou after a coup attempt. This was reported by the France 24 TV channel, citing a statement from eyewitnesses.

According to the TV channel, the military is holding the perimeter around the presidential residence, as well as restricting movement in several key neighborhoods of the capital. The area where international institutions are located is also blocked.

At the same time, according to France 24, there are no military personnel at Cotonou airport, and the main part of the city continues to operate normally. It is noted that "the cleansing of the territory from the rebels is progressing" and the situation "should stabilize."

As specified, the rebels were unable to take control of the residence of President Patrice Talon and the presidential offices.

Earlier it became known about the military seizure of power in Benin. Later, the office of the President of Benin reported that the head of State was safe, and the army was regaining control of the situation.

On December 7, the Russian Embassy in Benin called on Russian citizens to "stay in their homes" until the situation is clarified in connection with the military's statement about the seizure of power.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
