Russia and India are expanding cooperation from nuclear energy towards the Northern Sea Route (NSR). This was stated on December 5 by the head of the Rosatom state corporation Alexey Likhachev, answering a question from Izvestia.

"We see a potential of at least 5 million tons in the transportation of goods from Russian ports and back to India. This transit, which is currently going through the Suez Canal, may well be used by the Indians precisely within the framework of the Northern Sea Route," he explained.

Likhachev noted that Indian partners are actively interested in innovations in nuclear energy. He recalled that agreements had been signed between Russia and India to expand cooperation on small-capacity NPP projects, as well as to involve Indian partners in the creation of fourth-generation nuclear power.

"The Indians are particularly interested in the option of a floating nuclear power plant. There is a large coastline, islands, and there is an opportunity to partially localize shipbuilding competencies here directly at the shipyards of India," he concluded.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, following talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 5, said that Moscow and New Delhi were working on an agreement on India's free trade area with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The Russian leader added that the parties are actively developing new international transport and logistics routes, including the North-South corridor from Russia and Belarus to the Indian Ocean, as well as expanding the infrastructure of the Transarctic transport corridor using the Northern Sea Route.
