South Korea's plans to build the country's first nuclear submarine could trigger an arms race in Asia. This was reported on December 5 by the Reuters news agency.

It is noted that Seoul began implementing plans to develop a nuclear-powered submarine after US President Donald Trump approved the idea. At the same time, South Korea has long sought to become one of the countries with nuclear submarines.

Moreover, the country's authorities have repeatedly stated that this type of submarine must be in service with the army to counter threats allegedly emanating from the DPRK. According to the newspaper, South Korea's rapidly developing military program may irritate China, as well as force Japan to develop similar equipment.

"Submarines are highly effective attack systems. An arms race in the region is inevitable," said retired South Korean Navy submarine captain Choi Il.

The Republic of Korea's plans to build a submarine have also already caused a negative reaction in Japan, as Tokyo had previously outlined plans to enlist Washington's support in building a nuclear submarine. In addition, China is reacting cautiously to the news from Seoul, but "the situation can change quickly."

In October, Trump announced an agreement with South Korea, according to which the country would build a nuclear submarine for the American side instead of "old-fashioned diesel submarines."
