The psychologist named the reasons for the phenomenon of life postponement
The phenomenon of postponing life for later becomes especially relevant on the eve of the New Year, when many are trying to make plans for the future, but face internal resistance. Psychologist and Gestalt therapist Ekaterina Artemenko told Izvestia on December 5 that procrastination often hides not laziness, but a complex internal conflict between the desire for change and the fear of it.
"Attempts to force oneself to act through force usually turn out to be ineffective because they ignore the true needs of the individual. The widespread belief that "if a person wants to, he will do it" does not reflect the complexity of psychological processes," she said.
The reality is that one part of the personality strives for change, while the other unconsciously resists, trying to maintain a familiar routine or avoid the potential shame of failure. This fear is often formed in childhood, when mistakes were accompanied by punishment or rejection, which reinforces a risk-avoidance strategy. Sometimes the problem lies in overestimated expectations from oneself, when goals are set under the influence of social standards rather than inner desires.
The psychologist notes that sometimes the lack of movement can be a sign that the current state of affairs is quite satisfactory for a person, and this is also a normal option. In a world focused on continuous achievement, it is important to recognize the value of existing stability.
For eco-friendly future planning, Artemenko recommends formulating positive goals that reflect personal interests rather than external expectations. The key point is to break down large tasks into small steps, each of which should be satisfying in itself. At the same time, it is important that the process of achieving a goal gives energy, and the thought of possible failure does not cause paralyzing fear.
Earlier, on November 14, Anna Polosina, a specialist at the Faculty of Social Communication at MGPPU, said that young people are more susceptible to anxiety due to several factors: high awareness of mental health, a tendency to introspection and the influence of social networks. According to her, the availability of information about the psyche has formed the habit of young people to be more attentive to their own condition.
