- Faberge egg from the collection of Nicholas II sold at auction for more than $ 30 million
Faberge's "winter" egg, which once belonged to Russian Emperor Nicholas II, was sold at auction at Christie's for 22.9 million pounds (more than $ 30 million), including a commission. The auction was broadcast on Christie's website on December 2.
It is specified that the egg was sold for 19.5 million pounds ($ 25.7 million) after about three minutes of bidding, and taking into account the commission, the total amount was $ 30 million. This surpassed the previous record of $18.5 million set at Christie's in 2007 when selling another Faberge egg made for the Rothschild family.
The egg is made of rock crystal and decorated with snowflake patterns made of platinum and 4.5 thousand diamonds. Inside it is a basket with quartz flowers, decorated with precious stones. This egg was ordered by the emperor for his mother as an Easter gift in 1913.
Earlier, on November 30, a painting by Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens "Christ on the Cross", considered lost for more than 400 years, was sold at the Osenat auction in Versailles near Paris for €2.3 million. The lot was estimated at €1-2 million, and the starting price was €500 thousand. The buyer's name has not yet been disclosed.
