AFD MP criticized the aid to Ukraine at the expense of German debt
Germany has paid more for Ukraine than any other country in Europe, but now it is necessary to set priorities. This was stated on November 28 by Markus Fronmaier, a deputy from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, criticizing the assistance to Kiev at the expense of German debt.
According to him, Germany is currently unable to fully ensure the defense of its own country, but at the same time it has allocated about €72 billion to Ukraine.
"Germany has paid more for Ukraine than any other country in Europe, and at some point it is necessary to set priorities. <...> Everything that we have paid to Ukraine so far is 100% financed by debt, and we cannot continue to do so," said Fronmaier.
The deputy stressed that in foreign policy, the German authorities should be guided not by moral principles, but by "interests and real politics."
German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl said on November 20 that Germany would maintain its support for Ukraine. A day earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the amount requested by the European Commission (EC) to finance Kiev in the amount of € 135 billion does not exist, and for its transfer to the European Union (EU) will have to take a loan.
On November 17, EC President Ursula von der Leyen sent the text of her plan to expropriate Russia's assets in favor of Ukraine to the EU countries. In it, she listed two alternative options for financial support for Kiev, which, according to her forecasts, could face a large financial gap in 2026-2027.
In turn, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Steenergaard said that Scandinavian countries spend the most on supporting Ukraine among NATO members, and in the long run such a system cannot be sustainable because of its unfairness.
