- Geneticist Jiankui criticized the possible legalization of genetically modified children
In the near future, the creation of genetically modified children may be legalized in the United States under the influence of profit-seeking companies. On November 17, scientist He Jiankui, who managed to edit the human genome for the first time, told Izvestia about this.
He warned that Silicon Valley companies are funding experiments to create children who are genetically assigned a high IQ score.
"It is scientifically impossible to increase IQ by changing one or two genes. It's just not possible. And interference with the work of genes related to the brain can lead to new mental or neurological diseases. Many outstanding people have concomitant psychiatric features — this is a complex biology," the scientist said.
According to him, such an intervention is morally unacceptable and wrong from a scientific point of view.
Earlier in the day, billionaire Elon Musk's father Errol spoke about his son's use of IVF to give birth to twins. He noted that Elon Musk, along with his first wife, used this method to give birth to triplets and twins.
Prior to that, on July 30, it became known that a married couple living in Ohio, USA, became the parents of a boy who developed from an embryo stored since 1994. The donor was Linda Archend, who underwent in vitro fertilization 30 years ago, gave birth to a daughter with this intervention and froze three more embryos, for which she continued to contribute money.
