The problem of unauthorized connection to the power grid for illegal mining is extremely acute today and tends to worsen. This is especially true for regions with low electricity tariffs. This was stated by Senator Oleg Golov in an interview with Izvestia.

The difficulties, according to him, are related to several aspects. First of all, this is a security issue.

"Illegal miners are arbitrarily connecting to networks that are not designed for such high and constant loads. This leads to accidents at substations, power surges, fires in residential buildings and transformer booths. Conscientious consumers who are left without light and heat are suffering," the parliamentarian points out.

In addition, it causes economic damage. We are talking about the theft of electricity worth hundreds of millions and even billions of rubles.

"These losses put a burden on network companies, and ultimately on the regional economy," explains Golov.

The measures to impose criminal penalties for unauthorized connection to the electric grid, proposed by Senator Andrei Kutepov, will help combat violations by eliminating the imbalance between their severity and the assigned responsibility, he believes.

One of the functions of such innovations is deterrent. The prospect of getting a real term or forced labor will become a serious barrier, the source believes. He is also convinced that this will eliminate recidivism, since the bill provides for liability for those who have already been subjected to administrative punishment.

"Harsh sanctions for the destruction or disrepair of power grids for selfish reasons (which often occurs when artisanal connection of powerful equipment) is a necessary measure to ensure the energy security of the country," summarizes Golov.
