- Reuters has learned about the EP's plans to introduce age limits on the use of social networks
The European Parliament (EP) has called on the European Union (EU) to limit the ability of children under 16 to register on social media in order to combat the growing level of mental health problems among young people. This was reported on November 26 by the Reuters news agency.
"This call was made at a time when Australia is preparing for the introduction of new legislation prohibiting the registration of children under the age of 16 on social networks," the article says.
The parliamentary resolution, which was supported by 483 out of more than 650 MPs, called for an EU-wide ban on children under 16 from accessing online platforms without parental consent, as well as a complete ban on children under 13.
The parliamentary resolution also calls for a ban on the purchase of virtual items and participation in sweepstakes. In addition, plans to introduce age restrictions on registration on online platforms were reported in Denmark, Spain, Greece and France.
The Associated Press reported on November 7 that the Danish government announced an agreement banning the use of social media by children under 15. The measure is aimed at protecting teenagers from the negative impact of digital content and the pressure of commercial platforms. In some cases, parents will be allowed to provide access to social networks to children from the age of 13, but only after a special assessment.
