- The 2026 Olympics flame lighting ceremony will be held at the museum due to bad weather
Due to bad weather, the official Olympic flame lighting ceremony for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy will be held at the Archaeological Museum in Ancient Olympia on November 26. This was reported on the website of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Greece.
"The Olympic Flame will be lit in Ancient Olympia on November 26. Then there will be a nine—day torch relay, covering 2,200 km in 23 regional units and seven administrative districts, with 36 welcoming ceremonies across the country," the press service said.
It is specified that due to the small size of the museum, the event will be closed to the general public. According to preliminary information, Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas, IOC President Kirsty Coventry, President of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Giovanni Malago, President of the NOC of Greece Isidoros Kouvelos and Mayor of Ancient Olympia Aristides Panaytopoulos will also attend the ceremony.
The press service of the Russian Luge Federation announced on November 23 that the International Luge Federation (FIL) had allowed six Russian athletes to qualify for the Olympic Games. An accompanying team, including coaches, mechanics, doctors and massage therapists, will go with the Russian luge athletes to qualify for the Olympics, the federation concluded.
