Szijjarto pointed to the possibility of Hungarian MOL to get a stake in NIS Serbia
The Hungarian oil and gas company MOL could get a stake in the Serbian NIS, which is resolving the issue of Russian participation in its activities, the buyout would help bring the company out from under US sanctions. This was announced on November 17 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.
The head of the department explained that in Serbia, the majority owner of an oil company is Russian or majority Russian capital, and therefore NIS is subject to US sanctions.
"Therefore, the Serbs also need to do something. And theoretically, MOL could get a role in this (in Serbian NIS. — Ed.), because it is one of the strongest energy companies in the region," Szijjarto said on the air of the Hour of Truth program, which he posted on his Facebook page (part of Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
The minister also added that Hungarian energy companies may be interested in acquiring Russian Lukoil's enterprises in Bulgaria, which the Russian owner is now forced to put up for sale amid Washington's sanctions against him.
Earlier, on November 10, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed confidence that as long as he and US President Donald Trump are in power, Budapest will not face US sanctions against oil and gas supplies from Russia.
Also on November 7, Orban announced that the United States had completely exempted Hungary from restrictive measures on Russian energy supplies via the Turkish Stream and the Druzhba pipeline. In addition, he added that Hungary has agreed with the American Westinghouse on the purchase of nuclear fuel.
