The first nuclear power plant (NPP) under construction in Kazakhstan with the participation of the Russian state corporation Rosatom was named Balkhash. The relevant information was published on November 17 on the official website of the Atomic Energy Agency of the Republic.

"Following the results of the final meeting of the Competition Commission, the name Balkash Atom Electric Stations was recognized as the winner, which received the largest number of proposals from citizens," the statement said.

It is noted that in total, more than 27 thousand citizens over the age of 16 took part in the competition, and the commission selected 10,460 unique variants of names. At the final meeting, about 100 of the most popular titles were reviewed. So, 882 people offered Balkhash.

Earlier, on November 12, Alexey Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, said that the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan is of historical importance and requires very careful preparation. Likhachev added that the survey work on the shore of Lake Ulken has already been launched, but it will take about a year to complete. At the same time, work is underway to create intergovernmental agreements, at least on the construction of a nuclear power plant and financial cooperation.

On August 8, Russia and Kazakhstan launched the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the republic. Likhachev noted that the construction of the first nuclear power plant became possible thanks to the cooperation of the governments of Russia and Kazakhstan. The Russian side, he continued, proposes "to build the bestseller of today's global nuclear technology market" — a power plant with a VVER-1200 reactor.
