In the UK, the waiting period for permanent residence (permanent residence) will be increased to 20 years for illegal migrants. The Independent newspaper writes about this on November 16.

The publication says that the Interior Minister of the kingdom, Shabana Mahmoud, announced changes in legislation, which, according to her, will be the largest revision of migration rules in recent decades.

"Shabana Mahmoud outlined a number of drastic measures, including the introduction of a 20-year waiting period for refugees so that they can stay in the country permanently," the article says.

On November 4, The Times newspaper reported on the UK record for the number of asylum applications from migrants. Thus, the number of asylum applications submitted in 2024 exceeded 108 thousand. It is specified that in 2024 there were 28% more requests than in 2023 (84 thousand). The last record was set in 2002: 103 thousand requests were made then.

The Financial Times (FT) newspaper learned on September 20 about the plans of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to introduce digital identity cards in the country. This, as explained in the publication, according to Starmer, would have a positive impact on reducing illegal migration. The certificate was supposed to be issued to every person who has the legal right to live in the UK.
