The Ministry of Education and Science named the terms of study at universities according to the new model

The duration of studies at Russian universities during the transition to a new model of higher education will be commensurate with the time required to prepare for the chosen specialty. This was announced on November 16 by the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

"In the new system of higher education, the transition to which the leading Russian universities will begin in the 2026-2027 academic year, the duration of study will not be uniform. It will be determined by the time required for high—quality training in a particular chosen specialty," RIA Novosti quotes the statement.

The Ministry noted that different terms of higher education will allow students to create a wider range of strategies for professional implementation in the labor market.

Earlier, on November 13, it was reported that the Ministry of Education and Science is not going to introduce a complete restriction on admission to paid places for universities where the average result of the Unified State Exam did not reach 50 points, the innovations will affect only 10% of specialties. It was noted that since September 1, 2025, the government has received the right to directly regulate the number of paid places in universities in order to improve the quality of higher education and its compliance with the needs of the economy. Thus, universities will not be able to recruit students for paid tuition in some specialties. Currently, 42 areas are planned to be included in the government list, which is about 10% of all existing specialties.
