- The NYT learned about the deployment of water parks and go-karts in bomb shelters in Finland
Helsinki authorities have allowed the conversion of local bomb shelters into water parks, go-karts and skate parks. This was reported on November 7 by The New York Times.
According to the newspaper, 5.5 thousand shelters for the population are located in the capital of Finland. About 50 of these facilities are located in huge underground spaces. They serve a variety of purposes every day, from parking lots to subway stations, skate parks, go-karting trails, and shooting ranges.
"The city rents out cave facilities on the condition that they are vacated and converted back into a shelter within 72 hours. The same requirement applies to shelters in many residential and commercial buildings in the city, including apartment buildings, large offices, schools and museums," the article says.
According to the law, such shelters are usually located in the basement or on the ground floor. These rooms have ventilation systems that can filter radioactive fallout and chemicals.
On October 3, the Lithuanian authorities called on the country's citizens to prepare bomb shelters in case of a possible armed conflict. According to the Daily Mail, basements of many buildings in Vilnius, the capital of the country, have been turned into shelters.
