Nina Ostanina, a deputy of the State Duma, sent an appeal to the Russian Ministry of Health with a request to clarify the sanitary standards governing the presence of animals in public catering establishments. This is evidenced by the document she sent, which was reviewed by RIA Novosti on November 8.

The parliamentarian recalled that the current edition of the SanPiN prohibits the presence of insects and rodents in cafes, as well as synanthropic birds and animals. According to her, such wording allows the owners of establishments to allow visitors with pets, which, in the opinion of the deputy, violates the interests of other clients.

"We ask you to instruct us to work out the issue of making changes to the current wording, stating it in the following wording: "there should be no insects, rodents, synanthropic birds and animals in the premises of a catering enterprise," says the document addressed to the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko.

According to the parliamentarian, updating the wording "contributes to ensuring the sanitary and epidemiological well-being of the population."
