Scammers began to extort money from Russians under the guise of New Year's tours
Scammers have come up with a new scheme of deception: they ingratiate themselves into the confidence of Russians by offering to buy "last-minute" New Year tours, and disappear, having lured money. Andrey Biychuk, director of the Defender product at MTS, told Izvestia about this on October 7.
Scammers process victims over the phone under the guise of travel agency managers. The interviewee is offered to plan a vacation at a low price in advance, and after choosing a tour, they are persuaded to make an advance payment for booking.
"As soon as the first payment is made, the scammers, using the trust of the interlocutor, ask to repeat the operation, referring to the fact that it did not go through. The victim is sent a confirmation of the refund and persuaded to make a repeat transfer. After that, the connection with the "agency" completely stops: the phones do not answer, and the website, if there was one, stops working," Biychuk explained.
The expert reminded that tours can be booked and paid for only through the official resources of well-known operators and accredited agencies. Offers with huge discounts, demands to make an advance payment to an individual's card or make a payment through unofficial payment systems are classic signs of fraud.
"If you receive a suspicious offer, do not succumb to pressure: stop talking to the "travel company" and continue communicating only by official phone numbers and via email," he urged.
Earlier, on October 31, lawyer Ivan Kurbakov said that a new fraud scheme with the 13th salary and New Year's bonuses is gaining popularity in Russia. According to him, using the festive mood and financial expectations of citizens, the attackers are tricking them out of funds and confidential information.
