A Lebanese court has decided to release 50-year-old Hannibal, the fifth son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, after 10 years in prison and reduce his bail from $11 million to $900 thousand. This was reported on November 6 by the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, citing sources close to the proceedings.

"Hannibal Gaddafi was released after 10 years of imprisonment in Lebanon. <...> The judicial investigator <...> agreed to reduce the bail amount from $11 million to $900 thousand," the article says.

The source clarified that the judge's decision was discretionary — it is final and cannot be substantiated. The verdict, as specified, was delivered after a two-hour hearing, during which the defendant answered questions in the presence of his lawyers and the accusing party.

The reduction in bail, as the sources explained, was "exchanged" for a guarantee of the presence of Hannibal Gaddafi, who was arrested in December 2015 in connection with the disappearance of Lebanese imam and politician Musa al-Sadr, at upcoming trials. This step, called "condescending" by the publication, was, as explained in the article, the result of the assistance of the Lebanese and Libyan sides.

On October 17, the NNA news agency announced the possible release of Gaddafi Jr., subject to the payment of bail in the amount of $11 million. At that time, Lebanese MP Ashraf Rifi stressed that the court decision "contradicts the spirit of law and justice" and called for the immediate release of the prisoner, whose detention was unjustified.
